0 Comments Published by Tom Woodcock on Sunday, 1 November 2009 at Sunday, November 01, 2009.Well done to everyone who came out to support the postal dispute at Cambridge United on Saturday. The Trades Council sponsored the game in solidarity wit those striking to defend our services.
We collected over £300 for the strike fund and distributed 3000 leaflets explaining the dispute.Members from three Unite branches, UCU, NUT and Unison as well as students and other supported came and helped postal workers and their families get the message across about the importance of the dispute.
The Trades Council was well received. One student donating money said "We should make more of a fuss rather than saying we support them, I think we should be proactive about it, rather than just keeping it to ourselves, the public should go out there and make it known, and make it know to the government that there is more support and that the unions are backed by the general public." He vowed to visit the picket line on Friday to show his support.

Secretary of the Cambridge TUC, Tom Woodcock said " postal workers are defending the rights of all low paid workers and the vital service Royal Mail provides to so many. It the public wants reliable, compressive and affordable public services then we need to get right behind the dispute. It the government gets its way then Hospitals and Schools will be next on their list of services to attack. The support we received today was tremendous, however it is clear that some people don't understand just what the dispute is about and that is why it is import that people talk to postal workers."
Steve Sweeney, Secretary of the Cambridge & Stevenage postal workers support group added " The post office has become a key battle for all those who think ordinary people should not be made to pay for the bankers crisis. Hundreds of pounds have been donations to support local postal workers. We have received collections from school and nursery staff, print and publishing workers, from students, Labour party members and the local Stop the War group. people understand that the billions spent on war and bailing out banks should be used to make sure there are jobs, decent wages and quality public services"
Jamie a local deliveries worker leafleting the game explained why he was supporting more strike action; "When I started working there [Royal Mail] the average delivery had about 100 calls on it, and now they've got walks with 900, when posties can't finish their deliveries they're threatened with being taken off pay, so they're not getting paid at all for that whole day. And if they don't finish the delivery the mail just often doesn't get delivered that day, it gets left till the next day, and it's just getting ridiculous now."
There will be a meeting of the Cambridge & Stevenage postal workers support group at 7.30pm on Tuesday the 3rd of November at the Maypole pub in Park Street, Cambridge. All supporters welcome.
